Utit Choomuang

The Founder

Utit Choomhuang literally grew up in the jungle outside the then small village of Hua Sai on the East Coast of Southern Thailand. With the help of many wonderful people like Terry & Margit Fredrickson, and learning to speak & pronounce English correctly, Utit made an inspiring transformation to eventually become the Overseas Director of the well known animated TV series, The Simpsons.

Recently retired, he returned home to find a quickly developing agricultural  town.  Hua Sai and many  towns like it are facing poor education standards, polluted land and water, and depleted soils.

Utit is committed to creating sustainable environments, social progress and helping local children open new doors. What better way than to teach them English focused on speaking and pronunciation in combination with hands-on sustainable environment programs.

Terry Fredrickson

The Mentor

Terry Fredrickson is an American from Northfield, Minnesota. He was a 22 year-old Peace Corps volunteer stationed at a teacher's training school in Southern Thailand when he and Utit first crossed paths.

At 16 years-old, Utit had earned a place at the school and immediately embraced Terry's then (and still today) unconventional philosophy on teaching English.  That being English is the universal language and speaking it is what makes one confident & inspired.

Terry realized that Utit the curios jungle rat had too many questions about the USA so he wrote to his mom and together they decided to send him to America for one year.

Terry put the little mouse on a plane alone with a sign around his neck: "This person does not speak English, he might need your help" which he proudly wore all 40 over-excited sleepless hours to Minnesota.

Terry's wonderful Mother Margit and Dad Siguad  welcomed the exhausted man cub at the gate and brought the wide-eyed jungle boy to his new home,  in a new world half way around the planet.

Now more than 40 years later, Utit credits Terry as the inspiration behind UTIOPIA.  And to this day, Terry still makes himself available to his now not so young apprentice. Not surprisingly, Utit speaks of Terry in glowing terms, especially the gratitude for lessons learned and the friendship they have.

Terry has written and published many books on how to learn English. He currently lives in Bangkok with his wife and son Kevin. Most recently, the father-son team of Terry and Kevin has launched a unique, online platform  named Real English For Gamers.  where they learn proper English while they play.

Elaine D'arcy

The Philanthropist

The Philantropist
Elaine D'arcy is an avid world traveler. She fell in love with Thailand and currently resides at Patong Beach as her second home. An active philanthropist, she was profoundly inspired by the 2018 rescue story of 12 young Thai football leaguers and their coach trapped deep inside a cold, flooded, pitch black cave with no food for 9 days during rainy season in Thailand.

They were miraculously found by a team of Australian & British rescue divers. Elaine learned that only one of the kids knew how to speak English.  He understood and guided the 12 others to follow the divers' rescue plan, and essentially saved their lives.

In many ways the universal language, Elaine realized how important the opportunity to learn and speak English is. You never know the doors that can open...it may even save your life.  Elaine seeks to create a scholarship foundation that enables any aspiring child to learn and speak English.
